Justice?

Gandhi said,"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated."

Nothing brings this closer to home than the latest Fugly Horse of the Day post that directs readers to the site for a Thoroughbred rescue where a horse died a day after it was taken from a faux rescue where it and several other horses were starving. In Marin county, one of the richest areas on earth.

How on earth can anyone ever justify not feeding an animal that is dependent on you? You can bet the fake 'rescuers' never missed a meal.

And then I remember my beautiful horse Darya, who died while I was far away. A vet performed a necropsy and said that her heart had failed. But when I received her surviving friends a few months later, shipped to a new place, the fat, jolly Arabian mare was absolutely bony. Did Darya starve to death, and I wasn't responsible enough and didn't care enough to know? I remember how I visited her there, in what I thought was a good, safe place, and took a little time to brush her for what was perhaps the first time - and was certainly the last time - that anyone had ever handled her kindly in years. Then I went away and left her there.
There was no one in the world who loved her except me, and I failed her. This will haunt me, I think, for the rest of my life.

"We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were able to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form."
William Ralph Inge, 1922
